Running the Carcosa in front of the Ecstasy Red definitely gave me a bigger/noisier sound, but not really as much of the pronounced fuzz I was hoping for. Is this a drawback of the Carcosa, or just an issue with my particular setup? Putting it after was just too uncontrollable and noisy.

I have shed the shackles of 00s internet opinion that 'you need it all going into a dirty amp'. Some of the doom and sludge guys embraced it first when they realised their fuzzes sounded clearer and deeper through high headroom clean amps. Modulation lovers prefer clean amps too so chorus, delay, phaser flanger etc sound clear. Depends what tones your into.
